A Kid’s Review: Late Lunch at Jax Fish House

On a recent visit to Fort Collins with my parents, brothers and Uncle, we decided to have lunch. After walking along College Avenue for a while looking at lots of different restaurant menus in the windows, we settled on Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar, one of my Dad’s fave’s. Right away, I liked the atmospere which was really cool: Guests can take the crayons on the tables and write their names on the bricks on the wall. Jax makes you feel like you’re having a day at the beach – there is a giant swordfish on the wall and a really neat aquarium with lots of interesting and colorful fish – even Nemo! I liked the brick walls and more upscale casual atmosphere – my parents like that, too. And the music was nice and uptempo. Usually a nice full-service atmosphere can be accompanied by high prices – luckily we were there during happy hour and they have a great happy hour menu with really reasonable prices. Jax opens for Happy Hour at 2pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – yay! We’ve tried to go to lunch at the Boulder Jax so many times but it’s never open early on weekdays – Mon-Thurs. So…back to the food. The kids’s menu has lots of good choices like snow crab, grilled cat fish, grilled cheese, and housemade macaroni and cheese. Most of the prices on the kids’ menu are very reasonable. However, my brother ordered a side of fruit with his really tasty macaroni and cheese and it cost another $5 just for the fruit! So his kids’ meal was $10! My other brother and I had the snow crab and it was too small a portion. My parents ordered lots of small plates and were grazing. They ordered mussels and hush puppies – the hush puppies are some of the best we’ve ever had – delish! The happy hour menu had lots of “Southern” choices on it like hush puppies and shrimp and grits. It was a fun experience because they provided bibs to eat the crab legs, but my brother and I were both still starving after we had our snow crab. Our included side was seasoned house-made potato chips, but I’m not a fan of chips, so I was still hungry. We ordered a slice of key lime pie for the kids to share, but it was a small portion of very tasty and tart key lime pie served on very salty and bitter caramel that we did not like. There were no other good dessert options for kids on the dessert menu.

Our service was excellent, attentive, professional and pleasant, and a manager even visited our table to check on us. My family likes Jax a lot – my parents always enjoy the raw bar and so many fresh seafood options. The wedge salad was a hit with my dad. We will definitely continue to make Jax one of our family’s go-to late lunch spots on weekends!
